Why should Caribbean destinations set up a RedNote account?

RedNote is a popular social media platform for consumers and an essential marketing network for businesses and creators alike. It’s built with content discovery in mind, with a search-friendly and visually engaging interface that is perfect for brand promotion. RedNote is currently the most popular Chinese social media app for travel and tourism content, and with beach and island destinations being increasingly popular in China (see Guanxi’s blog on the island travel trend here) it’s the perfect time to get your brand out there. Destinations really started to embrace RedNote during the pandemic to offer inspiration to Chinese travellers unable to travel overseas, and quickly saw the power of the platform in driving engagement, views and subsequent interest in visiting.

How does RedNote work?

RedNote is a dynamic platform where engaging content, in the form of videos, images and text-based posts, is crucial for audience interest. A successful RedNote upload will feature high-quality content that targets relevant aspects of Chinese culture and trends, maximising engagement as a result. Once visibility for your account is gained, it can fade just as quickly; so it’s important to keep your profile updated with valuable and creative posts. RedNote runs off an algorithm that favours frequent uploaders- in order to promote your destination to the right audience, the consistent use of relevant hashtags and meaningful content is the key for being recognised and boosted by the system.

How can RedNote help drive visits to the Caribbean?

RedNote is the first step in inspiring Chinese tourists from both mainland China, but also the diaspora of students and residents living in North America, to consider the Caribbean. Running promotional campaigns on the platform can be the most effective way to ensure audience engagement, particularly with the student tourist demographic. As long as you use an agency with experience in Chinese social media, you will be able to avoid any issues with language barriers, time zone issues, localisation, keeping up with Chinese trends, and, importantly, avoiding breaking any of the platform’s rules which could lead to temporary account suspension.

Collaborations with influencers is an effective strategy for boosting engagement and giving your content the widest possible reach. Consider working with KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) and KOCs (Key Opinion Consumers) to promote your Caribbean destination, as travel blogs and vlogs are very popular for the Chinese tourist audience.

RedNote also has lots of functionality for sponsored posts, working with influencers, and running promotions, all of which can drive follower numbers up more quickly, but do attract fees to the platform.

RedNote in action

Guanxi represents the Pacific island of Samoa and posts on their RedNote account twice a week focusing on delivering inspirational content, primarily video and image-led blog posts. Samoa is a remote island, and the air connections with China are not direct, and prices are high. It is therefore very important that the account is attractive and inspirational to overcome the challenges of distance and cost. We also ensure that posts differentiate Samoa from other Pacific Islands, looking at local customs, food, events and unique products in order to ensure that people understand why they should visit Samoa as well as, or instead of, another island. This is a niche destination, but each post is now receiving around 1000 views.

This post is about the local food of Samoa and has been extremely successful. Posts about local delicacies are always popular as tasting local food is a very important part of any holiday for Chinese tourists. This kind of post also invites readers to post their own pictures of food they have eaten in Samoa, or things they would like to try.

Samoa also works with Chinese influencers and, in 2024 we invited influencers and tour operators to travel to Samoa to join the event, Samoa Tourism Exchange. We invited Sicilia, a travel KOL and professional photographer with over 1 million followers on Chinese social media platforms, to join the trip and document it to RedNote. Sicilia released two vlogs and a travel blog in June 2024, which drew in engagement from across the platform and helped to promote Samoa as a popular island destination for Chinese travellers.

At Guanxi, we have experience working with island destinations and a team ready to manage your brand’s Chinese social media accounts. To learn more about how we deliver promotional campaigns and manage social media accounts in China, please feel free to contact us for a chat.
