Leeds City Region holds Bake-Off in Beijing

March 16, 2016
By Helena Beard

This month, our team in Beijing organised and hosted a very unusual media workshop for 10 of Beijing’s top travel  journalists to introduce them to the cities of Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield and the surrounding regions of West Yorkshire.

We like to do things a bit differently at Guanxi so our Beijing Director, Vivienne, invited the media to an up and coming, trendy bakery in the city, and gave them all the opportunity to make their own ‘naked cakes’. Naked cakes have no icing and this style of cake is not only traditionally British, but also bang on trend here in the UK. Ask any bride-to-be considering her wedding cake this year!

Our journalists loved to hear about Visit Leeds’ marketing plans in the Chinese travel market in 2016 and offered their support and alliance to working with Guanxi to promote the region. They were also delighted with their Union Jack aprons which they took away as a memento of the day. Plus their own cakes, of course!

As a result of this activity, ten articles about Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield have been published online and in Chinese titles including Beijing Times, Travel Weekly and Lonely Planet Magazine.
