China is Finland’s largest source market in the Asia-Pacific region
On the 16th of December, Visit Finland and the Consulate General of the Republic of Finland in Shanghai held the “Pikkujoulu” (Little Christmas) campaign to convey the joyful atmosphere of the Christmas season to Shanghai’s tourism industry. Thanks to the Northern Lights and Santa Claus, Finland is making a strong recovery in tourism, with more and more people choosing to go to Santa’s hometown in winter to catch the Northern Lights.
Wu Zhaohong, Director of Visit Finland Greater China, said that before the pandemic China was Finland’s fifth largest source of tourists. Following the resumption of group tours by Chinese citizens to Finland in August last year, there has been a significant increase in the number of Chinese tourists visiting the country, especially during the Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year holidays. At present, China is Finland’s largest source market in the Asia-Pacific region. Since January 2024, the number of room nights visited by Chinese tourists to Finland has climbed to the sixth highest ranking of room nights traveled to by foreign countries, and in the first quarter of 2024, it has recovered to nearly 60% of 2019 levels.
