With the support of visa-free and direct flights, Georgia is continuing to develop the Chinese market and increase market promotion, looking forward to attracting more Chinese tourists. On May 28, China Southern Airlines launched its first visa-free inbound flight from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, to Urumqi, which has now increased to one flight per day and carried nearly 20,000 passengers in the first half of this year. On December 13, Air China launched a new three-weekly route between Urumqi in Xinjiang and Georgia in Pbilisi, and the increase in direct flights will help more Chinese tourists visit Georgia.
Maia Omiadze, Director General of the Georgian National Tourism Administration, said that China is a new target source market for Georgia’s tourism industry. Last year, Georgia’s tourism revenue reached $4.1 billion, and more than 48,000 Chinese tourists visited Georgia. Georgia’s tourism revenue is expected to increase to $4.4 billion this year, with nearly 33,000 visits from Chinese travelers in the first two quarters, an increase of 159.5% compared to the same period in 2023. The National Tourism Administration of Georgia has established close ties with tourism associations in China and is planning marketing campaigns through digital and traditional media channels. At the same time, it is actively opening new direct flights to other cities in China, and plans to develop ice and snow tourism projects to create a four-season mountain tourism destination. Georgian tourism revenue is expected to reach $6.4 billion by 2028, and the number of international tourists will increase to 11 million.
